A Cloudless Sky Will Prevent Your Growth!

Jenna Phillips headshotWhen we hear a weather report stating cloudless skies are on the horizon, we’re delighted for the forecast of perfection. We know we won’t be huddled under an awning before we get enough courage to sprint to the next one while the rain pours all over us. We love having a blemish-free canvas of a sky while feeling the warmth of the sun kiss our face.

If you live in Southern California, you know that this is something we experience often. And for anyone else who is bundled up and reading this while a snowstorm is brewing outside, you must know that us Angelenos actually get excited when clouds bring us storms. You see, this 75 degree weather isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. We are grateful for the majestic sun being available for us year-round, but when we have rain showers my Facebook newsfeed is sprinkled with status updates like:

“Loving this rain!”
“Can’t wait to see the rainbow!”
“I love driving through all these puddles!”

Yes, as much as we LOVE our fairytale weather, we’re also in love with the romance of a fierce rainstorm. I’ve always been fascinated by clouds and their poetic justice. They’re my favorite display of Nature’s artwork, and their symbolism of “beauty hidden inside of what might seem troublesome” has inspired me to write this blog.

This morning, I was speaking with my client about creating her 2014. She said, “I hope it’s an easy year for me because I’ve gone through so many challenges this past year.”

I asked her, “What if you hadn’t been given ANY of those challenges? What would your life look like today? Can you imagine having the SAME exact life today that you had one year ago? You’ve grown and accomplished so much! Inside of every loss, heartache, breakdown, breakup, disappointment, or tragedy lies a beautiful opportunity for growth & expansion. There’s a silver lining in every cloud!”

She had an “Aha!” moment and then spoke about her gratitude for all of the lessons she was gifted that have also brought her forward to this moment in her life.

I said, “Being challenge-free is no different than sitting on the couch or staring at the same cloudless sky everyday. Variety on this roller coaster of life is what defines us and allows us to experience all that The Uni-verse has to offer.”

Sometimes clouds bring us an orange and pink skyline at sunset. Sometimes they bring us rainstorms that lead to floods. Sometimes they tickle us with memories of Mary Poppins or shade us from the scorching sun. And sometimes they’re just there, all the while being seemingly unimportant.

At any moment, however, they’re available for our viewing pleasure and we can make them out to be whatever shape we want. As with any situation in life, we have the ability to give them the meaning of our choice. Clouds are beautiful and the perfect metaphor for your life. The next time you look at clouds in your sky, acknowledge them, appreciate them, and decide that they’re exactly where they’re meant to be.

I absolutely agree. I grew up in Israel, where cloudy skies are not that common, but interestingly, I always loved the cloudy weather, for some explainable reason. Perhaps, it is the magic and the beauty, as Jenna points out above, of the upcoming rainstorm… I’ve been living for the past 7 years in Boston, where the weather is very different from Israel. However, my love towards the fascinating, grey skies did not diminish. As Jenna writes in her blog, I also had a very tough year, full of challenges and lessons and a lot of inner self-inquiry that increased my understanding of my reality and and spiritual growth. Jenna, clouds are indeed the perfect metaphor for our lives, and we do have the ability to shape them in our minds to create the perfect picture that we want to see in out lives. Embrace your challenges, be grateful for the lessons given to you, because without them no evolvement or progress is ever possible. Thank you Jenna, for sharing my love for the cloudy skies.

Awesome Jenna! I have been worrying all week about a situation that seems to have a hard time correcting itself. I know the universe continues to tell me to be patient, but the people around me are so used to controlling the outcome, they never give the universe time to work its magic. I promise, I will be patient……THANK YOU!

That’s so awesome that you GET IT! The Uni-verse totally has your back and I promise you that this situation you speak of WILL work itself out when it’s supposed to. Patience is THE hardest thing for humans to master. It’s so cool that we’re given opportunities EVERYDAY to become better at it! 🙂

Love the analogy! I grew up in a small town in California called Salinas and people who live there usually complain about the CLOUDY WEATHER they experience. If there’s nice weather, it’s doesn’t last all day. We have “BIPOLAR” weather. What your post made me think of is sometimes life can be this way. Things are going well one-minute and then “boom” we are in tears!!! And I think that’s okay. There is a purpose for the problems I encounter and the fact that I encounter more as I resolve them. Sounds crazy but I get to be in love with the challenges that life brings me at the time life brings it to me. I love your post because seeing the beauty in “CLOUDS” empowers us to ENJOY the ride while we BEND, STRETCH, SHAPE, GROW, into our authenticity. If there were no clouds, how can we appreciate the sun?!

That’s so great! I know exactly where Salinas is. I’m from Carmel Valley! So, yes, I know the weather there very well. Thanks for reading my blog and sharing your thoughts! I love your perspective! xo

Great article. It truly is all about your perspective. My girlfriend and I recently had a serious talk about the direction our relationship was going. Some of it was difficult but coming out on the other side, I’m choosing to see it as a positive sign that both of us are very committed to relationship. Clouds, like fights, can can cause a rainy day , but without them, you wouldn’t have rainbows.
