Giving Back To Those Who Spiritually Feed You!

I just received a check in the mail for $9.61 from Kimya, a woman who told me that my blog post Stop Striving. You’re Already Enough  inspired her and that she tithes to people who spiritually feed her and make a difference in her life. This is the third such check I’ve received from people who also share this practice of tithing to those who fan the flames of their soul. Having never heard of such a practice, it inspired me to invite you all to do the same.

If I were to start such a practice right now, I’d owe hundreds of thousands of dollars to the people who have inspired me along the way – Rachel Naomi Remen , Martha BeckLouise HayBernie Siegel, Brene BrownMarianne WilliamsonKris CarrWayne Dyer, Richard Bach, Anne Lamott, Christine NorthrupChris GuillebeauElizabeth GilbertEckhardt TolleByron KatieSheila Kelley, Martin Seligman, Judith OrloffJonathan FieldsMama GenaSonja LyubomirskyLarry DosseySera Beak, Danielle LaPorteNeale Donald Walsch, and countless, countless others.

I’d have to drain my bank account to even begin to express the immensity of my gratitude for how deeply these people and many others have touched my life.

But what if, instead of going backwards in time, I started today? What if YOU started today?

Tithing For Inspiration

Growing up in a family of three Methodist ministers, I was certainly taught to tithe – to give 10% of my earnings to the church as gratitude for all God’s blessings.  But I have to admit, it always felt a bit like a racket. I never really resonated with the church, and although I know they tried to do good in the world, it wasn’t the kind of good I wanted to do.

But giving money to the people who teach me, who lift me up, who inspire me? Now I can track with that!

It has left me looking at what inspires me in a whole new way – and just the process of trying to decide who to send money to leaves me in a state of so much gratitude.

Right now, I’m reading Sera Beak’s The Red Book. And I’m going slowly through it because I’m getting SO MUCH out of it (Sera is my kinda spiritual teacher!  I wrote about her work here). Because she’s contributing so much to my spiritual growth through the workshop I took with her and her book, I want to tithe to her. So I just sent her a little love letter – with $100.  It feels good to me, and I hope it gives her a lift the way Kimya’s $9.61 check gave me one, and I hope it reminds her that the hard work she does getting her message out in the world isn’t in vain, that she has touched my heart and many others.

Who Would You Tithe To?

Who inspires you? Who makes your days brighter? Who might you tithe to?

It doesn’t have to be an author or blogger or teacher. It could be the janitor that always smiles and asks about your day and really means it. Or it could be the woman at Starbucks who knows exactly how you like your latte and serves it up with such devotion that your day always begins with love. Or it could be the nurse at your doctor’s office or your secretary at work or the woman who cares for your child.

How might you give back and thank someone for how they brighten your day?

I’m committing to tithing in this way. Will you join me?

Paying it forward,

PS. Bless you Kimya. You made my day :)

Thanks for this post!  It really resonnated with me!  I think it’s a GREAT idea to give back to those who’ve given to you (even when, and perhaps especially when, they don’t realize they’ve given you so much).  I NEVER thought of doing that, but don’t know why.  It makes complete sense.  I’ve always donated money to charities I believe in (my form of tithing I suppose).  But I never thought to simply give money to individuals who have impacted my life.  I will look at my life and the people in it in a whole new way now.  Thanks for the inspiration!

The top person who I feel I’ve learned the most from is Wayne Dyer.  From reading (and listening to) his books (not meeting him personally…yet).  But (and I don’t know if this is good or bad), but I feel like he already has “enough” money, so my sending him $100 or whatever it would be, while I’m sure it would be appreciated and recieved with love, it wouldn’t have the same impact as if I’d given that $100 to my local animal shelter or to an exceptionally good waitress.  You know?

I think that’s a great idea. But I will say that the ‘tithe belongs to good. I would venture to call it ‘sowing ‘ that we would be shopping. Sowing into people’s lives that are impacting is in simmer way along this spiritual journey we are on. I don’t think it matters how much money the person has that we sow to But what it does is allows us to give n in return receive a harvest. Because whatever u sow, you shall surely reap. I used to look At that as a scary thing, But, now I know it’s not scary because I can choose to sow blessings into people’s lives. N that’s a great thing.

I had a lot of autocorrects in my post. Sorry. I meant the ‘tithe’ belongs to God. He gets out first 10%. That’s what tithe means.

I feel similar to Sarah Noel. How would you respond to that? People like Julia Cameron, many of the ones you’ve mentioned too, and Jack Canfield, etc. Already receiving so much. But I also appreciate your idea of the other people who inspire us on a more local level.

I dig what you’re doing and think it’s GR8!  Regarding authors and motivational speakers etc..i feel that buying their materials..books, tapes, DVD’s etc  for myself or as gifts for others IS showing my regard and gratitude for these individuals.  Buying $100 of their books and blessing  friends and family or even strangers with a copy will definitely increase the popularity of these individuals…and send a message to the author and the industry that this type of material is well received and in demand.

I’ve implemented “tithing” a number of years ago and i feel like i’ve been blessed by the practice.  we have been struggling financially for the past three years as many have been due to the economy…. but i continue to tithe.  I never feel poor if i have something to give.  If i reach into my tithe envelope to sow into someone elses life and that envelope is empty then i can’t help……fortunatly that hasn’t happened.  God has continued to bless me with continueing funds so i always have something to give.   I set aside 10% of any income i get.  I consider it God’s money not mine.  I try to give it as i feel He leads me to……to places i have been feed spirtually so that these messages can continue to bless others and to anyone i feel God places on my heart to bless or help.   It’s not relevant to me if this person has a lot of money or a little..i give as i feel led to.  I don’t always give money…it can be something someone needs or something that makes a person feel loved or valued. soup for a neighbor, a greeting card …flowers…this practice has made me more sensative to the needs of others. Many times the “need” is not financial…they are in need or needy but it’s in feeling loved or that they matter.   Everyone is blessed by feeling that they matter and are valued.

    continue the good work!

Ive been utilizing this phlosophy for a few years now. I’ve given to Marianne Williamson and Vanzant for direct insight that came from reading their books. I’ve also given to Martha Beck’s charity, which is what someone can do if they feel the person already has enough. This is my way of giving good back into the world and it ALWAYS makes me immediately feel abundant, even in those times when I don feel I have enough.
