Goals! Goals! Goals!

by Daymond John on April 11, 2011

If you have been to one of my keynote addresses, motivational speeches or even follow me on Twitter, then you will always hear me speak about my goals and goal settings. Often you will read a tweet I make around 4 AM that reads, “1 more hour till 5 AM Goals, knock out & right back up at 8am.”

Many of my followers will respond to me by asking what my goals are, or how I go about my goals. I’m sure some followers think, “Would he shut up with this Goal crap all the time? What is he talking about?”

Well, I’m glad I have the opportunity to clarify and share with you my theory and techniques when practicing goal setting.

For those of you that do not understand the lingo of the tweet in less than 140 characters and do not yet know my thought process, this is the translation of my 4 AM tweet:

I will read my list of 5 to 8 goals that range from Health to Family to Business. These goals are the same goals I read almost every night and every morning I wake up. Once I complete the 20-minute process of reviewing my goals, I would go to sleep and let my subconscious mind absorb my last thoughts (goals) so that it infiltrates through my brain. With any luck, the goals would take over and I will visualize and dream of them as they turn into reality. (Of course this all goes out of the window if I end up scarfing down a spicy taco at 3 AM-that’s when my dream turns into having a headless horseman chase me in a dark forest for my last taco while I’m wearing my 3rd grade Karate suit!) But, if all works out right. I’ll wake up at 8 AM, having had a great night’s sleep with dreams of where I want to see myself in the future. When I wake up, I’ll read my goals all over again.

There you have it, the short tweet could mean all that! A side note: I’m often asked about my 3-hour sleep during the weekdays. Keep in mind that I do get to rest on trains, planes and automobiles. In the event my body doesn’t feel up to speed, I will shut it down immediately and give my body some rest. Therefore, please do not think it’s a everyday thing because health is most important of all.

Back to goals: goals are ideas I’ve always been fascinated by, and I find that a lot of the inspiration comes from reading books. I was first introduced to the concept of goals when I picked up “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.  Other than books of religion, such as “The Bible”, “Think and Grow Rich” is credited to creating more of the world’s most successful people than any other book published in history.

Anthony Robbins, a great Motivational Guru I admire, likes to compare goals to an airplane traveling from NY to LA. When a pilot programs an airplane to a computer, the goal is to land at a specific location in LA; the aircraft will fly off course 95% of the way. The programmed destination in the computer corrects the aircraft every time to keep it on track.

Another book I find helpful in terms of setting goals is “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrnes. She describes goals as your thoughts that float into The Uni-verse and then becomes a part of a vibration or frequency that ultimately turns into reality. There’s also “Goals” by Brian Tracy on how to get what you want faster than you think. Speaking of think, another all-time favorite of mine is “The Little Engine That Could” by Waty Pipper with the famous line of “I think I can, I think I can!” This children’s classic book teaches you how to achieve your goals from the very basic, yet not an easy task, of setting your mentality to reach to the top before letting yourself down.

The significance of goal setting is valued a lot more than you think-that’s why books about it are written to target people of all ages. It’s a concept that needs great preparation and develops overtime. Once you understand and embrace the concept of Goals, you will see and hear it all around you and notice that it is one of the most common exercises of all successful people. If you don’t consider yourself a practitioner of goals, you’re probably not aware that goals can be both short and long term.

The bigger questions are:

Are you conscious about goals? Are you in control of them? Do you craft them to maximize the outcome?

By letting you into my mindset and by suggesting books for you to read, I hope I’ve peaked your interest in Goal setting and what I consider is the #1 reason to many successful people, including myself.

In the event that you are unable to find the time to read those books, my next blog will be the detailed information about how to write, read and time Goals in the way I find most effective. But for now, my Goal is to make you wait and keep you guessing!

Wishing you all the love and Power in the world.

Best Regards,

Daymond John

Wow. This blog post really made my day and eliminated any fear and doubt I had in me today. Thank you Daymond for fueling me with this positive energy and thank you Mastin for allowing him to communicate it through TDL! The power of a mind that is willing and able is a force not to be reckoned with! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the idea of reading the goals before bed and as soon as I wake. It puts into manifestation the bible’s ask, believe and receive mantra, which has now catapulted Rhonda Byrnes’ book “The Secret.” Thank you once again.

Thank you for phenomenal tidbits into ideas that are so obvious that we often overlook them. Like “The Secret”, we need to remind ourselves to focus on the positive, focus on goals, visualize, dream, accept and believe in… put these things into the Uni-verse. This is by far, my favorite TDL gues blog. I look forward to many more. I think I can… and I know I can…. Thank you for very simple steps to achieve goals!

First of all, favorite book as a kid “The Little Engine that Could”. I teach preschool and I read them a book about these animals that have affirming thoughts like I am beautiful, I am strong and I have the kids yell out each page “I am beautiful, I am strong”, etc. Also, one day I was speaking to a woman about my business and my goals and she told me I reminded her of the book The Secret and that I have it. So I definitely relate to your thoughts and your goals. Going to go dream! Thanks for the inspiration.

Okay, no offense… But that was confusing as hell! More on the specifics of your goal setting and what goals you actually have set and accomplished and less about your tweeting style and sleep patterns. Just sayin. Not trying to be negative, just trying to keep it real.

Damon, I dont have a twitter account, but I’d join just to follow you! Thanks for what you said about goal setting. A practice that I have done in the past with great success and only just re-discovered it thanks to you.

    you’re the best!

Thank you for sharing your wisdom and insight into such a simple task, that’s yet so impactful. I too have my goals written down, but I am striving to be more diligent (as you are) with reading them twice a day. After posting my comment, I plan to go retrieve my slip of paper they’re written on in my bible, and get to reading!

I first learned of the power of the unconscious from, “The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success” by Deepak Chopra. Although, releasing your intent into the universe is only one of the laws, the book centers around this concept of creating success by connecting with the universe, letting our thoughts go, and remaining detached to the outcome; allowing it to manifest on your behalf. As I am dreaming of creating the next big niche within the fashion footwear industry, I will wake up smiling because… I know I can!

    Stay blessed,
    La Moore
