Just Be The Global YOU … A Note On Comparison!

DanielleLAPorte001I have a friend who is an aspiring novelist and brilliant writer in her own right, who said to me that she wanted to be the “Canadian Anne Lamott“.

I said, “Why don’t you just be the Global You?”

We must have the daring to be nothing but ourselves if we are to know what true power is.

Comparison is crazy-making. It stamps on potential and truth and all the good things you might already have going for you if you weren’t so busy shadow-boxing with the people who you think have it better.

Comparison is a slippery slope to envy and for the most part, envy wastes energy that could be put towards getting what you want or optimizing what you have.

It is so hard not to compare yourself. I’m a teacher and we are compared to each other all the time. Our test scores are analyzed side by side, our grades, how many awards we hand out, how many parents request us… When you are having a great year, it feels great. When you are not it levels you flat.

I want to just be in my classroom loving and teaching my kids without worrying about what other teachers are doing or not doing.

So true – “the Global you”; although no reflection on the great Anne Lamott. Be you and the magic happens. Thank you

I must confess, I am SOOO guilty of this! I often have to pull myself back from the constant comparision I do in my head with other nutrition and health coaches.  I have been struggling to get my business going which is largely due to comparing myself to others.  I see ALL these health and wellness practioners fearlessly (it appears) creating amazing practices…while I sit and feel doubtful, tell myself it is too late, there are already so many people doing the same thing….it goes on and on. Then there are moments I can step out of that and remember that I am unique and I have special gifts to give the world, I wouldnt be here if I didn’t right! I am working on courage, working on Faith (what better reminder as that is my name! and for a reason!) So I choose, right now, to completely let go of this need to compare.  It is and has been a waste of my energy, and has kept me stuck.  I am done with it, for good.  thank you this inspiration =)

You definitely have to keep it in check. I know I have women who I admire and qualities I would like to embody. However I try hard to keep in mind that this is my story and I’m Alex. In my industry its hard to find women who look like me that are doing what I want to do. So when I can find someone who’s successful doing what they love, I take note. But in the end I focus on my path because when I do reach my mountain top it’ll be much sweeter to reach it as Alex.

You are so right! I don’t know why there’s such a trend towards branding people as the next such-and-such. It’s like we don’t know what’s good without reference to something that already exists.
