Since When Does Being Spiritual Mean You Have To Be Broke?!?

by Mastin Kipp on March 2, 2012

I wanna talk about abundance.

As I’ve written many times, there was an almost two year period when I was couch surfing while I was getting TDL off the ground.  It was a brutal process that taught me a lot about myself and my own resilience and the power of The Uni-verse to always support me, even when I can’t see HOW it’s going to come.

As a part of 2012, I’ve been launching some online stuff like Love Uni-versity, Group Mentoring and continuing my one-on-one practice.

It’s been amazing to see the results and transformation in people’s lives as a result of doing these cool things.

There’s a BUT. And my BUT is… BUT, there have been a few people who have written in to me and basically asked me questions like “how can you charge for your gift” or “do you give away all money above your basic needs to charity”, and many other thoughts, ideas and suggestions.

Money is a funny thing. It brings up all kinds of issues and stories. I know it did and still does for me, which is why I am writing this blog.
I was talking with a friend of mine, who is well regarded in the personal growth world, and they said that they have experienced a lot of negativity around their ability to generate an income, too. There is a section of people who seem to backlash once there is any kind of money discussion. It’s like those of us who have chosen to be in the world of personal growth have committed some kind of sin by creating a product or having a desire to attract abundance.

Most of the time, after a little digging, the folks who have a problem with money and personal growth going together, I find are in a state of lack in some area of their life. And I’ve seen a tendency to lash out at people like me who happen to make money from a creative gift.
And what I want to say to the community today is that abundance is our birthright. Yours, mine and everyone you know. Your dream is for your creative gift to support you in this world. That is the dream scenario.

On top of that, there are PLENTY of people who run fear-based businesses that make a tremendous amount of money in ways that do not have the triple bottom line of people, profit and planet.

I believe it is folks like those of us in the personal growth field, teachers, healers and people who are here to benefit society that should be making the most amount of money. Not because we are greedy, but because we are living in integrity-based abundance.

The more loved-based businesses that are practicing sacred commerce that exist, the more we can employ other people who work at fear-based places, and help transform their lives through their employment. My vision for TDL is that not only does our content transform the world, but also the way that we do business transforms our employees’ lives.

To make it wrong or “un-spiritual” for love-based businesses like TDL to make money is simply promoting more lack consciousness.

We are all on the same team. We are here to support and help each other grow and to step into our collective abundance.

Imagine if EVERYONE reading TDL manifested true spiritual, emotional, financial and physical abundance in their lives. That would be enough of a tidal wave of Love to transform the whole planet!

I’m here cheering you on and everything I do everyday is to add value to your life, to make your day even just a little bit better. And the cool stuff I’ve created that benefits you is there to serve, not just you, not just me, but also the community and eventually the TDL employee family.

Let’s not tear each other down because we all share the desire for abundance and we have some made up rule that says because we are on a spiritual path we must be broke or not live in abundance. Let’s support each other in our greatness and in our ability to become the BEST and MOST fulfilled people we can on every level – personally, professionally, emotionally, spiritually AND financially. Being rich is an inside job and just because you have money doesn’t mean you’re rich.

Richness is a sense of inner fulfillment and happiness. It’s an art. And it requires growth, contribution and giving Love and value to people in a way that exceeds their greatest expectations.

Let’s decide to be on each other’s team and honor our creative gifts and the fact that it’s our right to charge an equal value for their worth in the world. This isn’t un-spiritual – it’s a super spiritual thing to live in abundance.

I wish this for you!

2011 was the first year I started giving 10% of my income to local charities,  international charities, church projects.  I also started giving my time.  The impact has been amazing.  There is nothing better than giving away part of your income to break greed.  I’ve been spending less on shopping, not as a conscious withdrawal but unconsciuosly, I just don’t feel the need.  My time has become more focused.  I feel more joy.  And one of the charities has invited me to an event with a woman I always admired!  Its pretty much amazing.
I can see how this view of money, as a means rather than an end or something to hold onto, can permeate every area of life and also be applied to implementing ethical business practicies.  Thanks for this post.

Money is the energy we give to it. When we have none we look down on those who do by labeling them “greedy” or by saying “they’re probably living above their means.” We all care about money. We need it to live. Quality of character trumps any amount of money any person could ever have in their bank account.  Automatically judging people with money is no different than judging someone without it.  Money only takes on the meaning and energy we give to it. When we see others with gadgets or expensive things we want to label them materialistic and frivolous. That’s called envy. No one has a right or claim to what another person has earned monetarily or otherwise. Those who have it can lose it tomorrow. Those who have none could wake up a millionaire. None of that has any bearing on the strength of character. Your heart is your heart. So, instead of placing so much value on how many dollars someone has or doesn’t have, rather than concentrating on their character, could possibly serve as a spiritual exercise for us all. I know people who read this blog, self-help books and try to take in all of the positivity of the world yet they are bankrupt personally, professionally, emotionally and spiritually.  Thank you for this and for always being honest. I respect any person who has the ability to take off their mask and dare to be vulnerable. That takes guts! I appreciate you!

What do people think you live off then, air?!! you devote you day entirely to giving to others, whether it is by providing us all this online, the courses you give, the amount of writing you need to undertake to provide us with the content we are looking for to thrive, let alone the team of people you need to employee to help you, especially with it growing. You’ve got to live and eat too – we all do!

I for one don’t bat an eyelid at it, so far I am getting all this for free (well besides the internet connection! LOL), and it has had a huge impact on my life, and I am so grateful and I pass the gratitude on by promoting you were I can and also by quoting you, and passing on the gifts of love and self-worth you are giving to me, to others.

Thanks Mastin! And actually was just looking at the mentoring courses you provide when I read this too, and thought the cost of them was very reasonable. Plus you have me doing a vision board now as well, and although I have been a fan of Tony Robbins for about 15 years now, I have never managed to get to one of his seminars, but I have now put that on my vision board too.  Once I start reaping the abundance, you will be getting it back anyway! LOL.

    VERY well said! :)

Great post Mastin. As Deepak Chopra says in his ground-breaking book The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, we live in an abundant Universe …..we are also meant to be abundant in our personal lives. People deserve to be paid for their time, energy, effort and brilliance. We will happily pay a surgeon who saves our physicsl body, why wouldn’t we pay those who provide emotional and spiritual nourishment? Good for you for shining a spotlight on this topic!

You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want. Zig Ziglar. If you are not living in abundance, you are not helping enough people. Start with an attitude of what can I give, not what can I get.

how sad that those individuals do not applaud you for you efforts that  allow the rest of us struggling financially to have access to your love university classes.etc.   They don’t see that.  I for one am so thrilled that you have your system where you pay what you can – how beautiful is that!  Do you ever go to the doctor and they say – “you know what, I know you need this, can benefit from this, pay me what you can for now.”  the only individual i have come across like that in my real world is my yoga teacher.  She has many of us that are struggling financially and has told us “don’t stop coming to class because of money, come anyway” – WHO DOES THAT THESE DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!  Very few Mastin and you are one of those.  Blessings.  Namaste

Amen to that! Loved this too –> “Being rich is an inside job and just because you have money doesn’t mean you’re rich.”

I  think it is a good question:

As you know, there is a  difference between giving, spiritual giving, sharing, selling, charging, making a living, etc, and without judging the value  of one over the other, should one claim they are giving, or practicing spiritual giving when they are selling or charging?  or simply doing what they like to make a living?  And, just because you are selling or charging, or doing what you like to make a living does that mean that you aren’t giving? Yet, can you truly give, if you expect or want something in return?  So can a human truly give?  or merely practice learning to give?  Or, are there just many ways of giving? Or is it simply a matter of  learning to give to yourself first, so that you can truly give to others?  Or, if you do not give to yourself, how can you truly give to others? Or is it just a knowing that this is the way you are meant to be giving  within the limits of the human condition? And what is the meaning of true abundance?  And how should we truly measure it?   Could it vary from individual to individual? circumstance to circumstance?  … and don’t forget about cultural differences, and the ever present human condition.

It seems to me that it is more about making a CHOICE–perhaps an individual choice with lessons to follow….

So, Mastin, I’m thinking that you just made a choice to make a living at something that you enjoy as so many others “do’”…you want to make a living this way, and isn’t “choice” included in free will, no?

But  there are people who CHOOSE not to “sell their gifts.”  Does that mean that they will not receive “abundance?”   If they believe they are abundant, are they not abundant? Is their truth not their truth?

Will  not my journey lead me to my own destiny, or do you seek to give me yours?

So why can we not have a mindful discussion about both ideas?

Why can we not simply ask the question? and simply explore it? Are we not all equal? Or do some  ”egos” seek merely to placate themselves by insisting to be more enlightened than others?

      I agree.

Integrity based abundance is rare. Which is why it is so precious. And difficult. It does not fit the current model. There are few maps to navigate, as there are few people and businesses who practice integrity based abundance in all domains. It asks us to check in every moment the intention behind our action, and call the truth. It asks us to trust, when trust is scarce. I love to see people and companies really succeed in integrity based abundance because we are the wayfinders. Bravo Mastin.
